"Misery" is an appropriate title for this picture. The little boy, shabbily dressed in a man's cast-off rags, evidently belongs to no one.

But he stands with dignity and with a look on his face that is much older than his years. He has lived on the street and has learned to survive.

In addition to keeping his head warm, his hat could also help him to beg. He looks as if he is hoping someone might come by and put some money in it.

Where is this child's mother? What has happened to her that she is not able to care for her son?
